Misery Monday VI | Refund deadline, Suit of Flesh, Survey
about 1 year ago – Mon, Jan 20, 2025 at 12:04:10 PM

Hello my friends in Misery, (Miserians?)

Firstly, I wanted to remind people you can request a refund at any time until February 2nd (30 days after the campaign ends). After that, no refunds will be offered. Thanks!
You can contact me at [email protected] for that.

So let's look at our First six cards of the Suit of Flesh! Enoch and I removed some of the sex elements from this suit, but the upcoming 5 does feature a giant penis, so there's always that to look forward to I suppose.

  • The House
    • The House of Flesh is The Palace of Flesh, where people enter to spend and forget. It's a place to escape your weakness, your struggles, your lack of money, goals, hopes. It's full of shame, but it is the ultimate place of bargaining. One of the figures at the door is holding a hand out to receive your payment to enter.
  • 0 The Folly
    • In the House of Flesh, our 0 is The Hungering Lust. It can be hard to tell where our grasping hands and impossibly hungry sex begin or end in this card. This is being caught in your shame, in your vice, your dark secret, your ecstasy, but you don't stop when caught. You continue but now deeply shamed. While this is the house of Anger and Bargaining, it is equally the house of Shame. How we bargain with our pain, how we cope, can be the salve and the shame.
  • 1 The Portal
    • In the House of Flesh, our 1 is The Orifice. We take the flesh by the handful and pry it open to enter. We must be hard, strong, vicious to fit into this space. We get in with our rage, our fist, our wiles. It means we want it badly to go in. Release, violence, anger, trade, shame. We enter it with gusto because we need it. Even if to go in is to debase ourselves. To beg at the altar for a trade out of our situation, even if it's only temporary.
  • 2 The Nemesis
    • In the House of Flesh, our 2 is The Doll. This being is beaten and bruised, the subject of our cruelties, even as it begs us to continue. We seek something to hurt or blame, to trade, to enjoy. The Doll is not truly a nemesis, but we put a mask on it to pretend it is not actually our victim. We must convince ourselves it tempts us with its ease of being hit, taken. It is the victim of abuse, physical, sexual, mental, and it is our warning that our cruelties are being explained away when they cannot be. Should not be. The victim of our failures.
  • 3 The Wound
    • In the House of Flesh, our 3 is The Wet. This is someone peeling the flesh from their arm, ready to transform it into something beautiful, golden, forever. Our rage is self destructive. It hurts us by making us convince ourselves that if we tear ourselves down, something good will come of it. But we cannot replace our broken ugly arm with that golden one. We never could have. We tore down what we were afraid of, hated, because we didn't find peace. You cannot let go of things to gain something greater than you ever had. You must work for it over time.
  • 4 The Harmonic
    • In the House of Flesh, our 4 is The Meat Market. The foundation of this anger, shame, bargaining, is the bare concept that us, our bodies, our time and energy, is for sale. There is a market for these things, for sex, desire, and shame. As long as it's available for trade, we will stay with it. If you stop buying into the market, you will be free of its enticement. Stop giving up things that make you feel happy to lose a few more pounds to be worth loving. Stop changing how you dress, your hair, so someone will want you. Stop thinking you can trade your own happiness to fix the problems in your life. When you can see that, you'll be able to leave the market.

This is a complex suit, dealing heavily with sex and violence, but also anger and bargaining as the healing journey through grief. Each card can and does have multiple meanings depending on what you're reading for, what their place is in a spread. It is also the one that I think most could lead people to face difficult topics, and as such might be best brought to the table with others for readings with warnings.

I have the 5 in hand, but saving it for next week as usual. Meaning we have 5 cards to see next week: 5, 6, 7, Denizen, Ruler. I will see you all then. And goodness, I hope this day ends.

Surveys

Surveys are going out today to your emails. This is to collect your address (yes you can update it at any time before we actually ship).
You may also choose to add more items to your order in this survey. You will be prompted to choose a card/payment method, but note this does not actually charge you right then and there for the items. I have to do that manually, and that won't likely happen until next week.
Please note that at this time you do not have shipping charges calculated or added to your order. That will happen after manufacturing is done and we are actually about to ship!

So for now, just put in the address you're likely to be at around May this year, and add any extra items you wanted to add-- like perhaps the commemorative mug about whether or not Enoch was mauled by the creature I may or may not be keeping in the same basement I have him locked in.

Misery Monday V | The Fulfilled House of Rot!
about 1 year ago – Mon, Jan 13, 2025 at 03:54:11 PM

Welcome back to another Misery Monday,

And today, I have the final set of cards in the House of Rot! You can see the full suit on the main campaign now!

Our House of Rot is now fully rotten! You can see it on the main campaign page as the full house, but here are the five new cards! The 5, 6, 7, and the Denizen and Ruler.

  • 5 The Excess
In our suit of Rot, we have The Piles. In excess, Rot is acceptance to the depression pit being reality. Garbage is not cleaned or removed, merely moved from pile to pile. It is the feeling that we are the rot itself, it is the fabric of our lives, not that we fell into depression, or that it's temporary.
  • 6 The Ecstasy
In our suit of Rot, we have The Abandonment. At this point, we stop interacting with the outside world entirely. We ignore help, we ignore others' call for help. We no longer see other people or their problems or their lives. This is freeing. We feel a weight off our shoulders when we shrug off other people's lives.
  • 7 The Finale
In our suit of Rot, we have The Walking Dead. To leave this house is to wear ourselves outside as we are. At its best, we may look different from others. We may feel different, more likely, messier, difficult. But at the worst, we pass with the rest of the world. People don't notice we are a walking corpse, hardly alive. We are good at it. Feigning life.
  • Denizen
In our suit of Rot, we have The Trashman. This is a person who will take your burdens. Do not fear sharing your heavy thoughts and weights with others. The trashman can help bear our burden, take it away from us even, if we let it. Let your friends help. Release your pains.
  • Ruler
In our suit of Rot, we have The Great Weight. The vast weight of the creature is a crowned skull atop a mass of garbage and grasping hands. Some people don't want you to be anything, to do anything. They want to keep you small, in their shadow. It may be too late to get out of this thing. Or... did you move a little? Did you grab the dirt and pull? You must dig your way out now. You must try.

Now that the House of Rot is complete, we will roll back to the house that was after Wire, the House of Flesh! Enoch has already turned in the House of the suit, so we are on our way. Hope you all had a great weekend! I know I'm already missing it haha.

Let me know if there's stuff you want to know about the deck still that isn't in the planned updates from last update! I think at this point it's a straightforward march to the end! : )

See you next week,

Misery Monday IV | The House of Rot & Our Schedule!
about 1 year ago – Mon, Jan 06, 2025 at 02:46:32 PM

Hello Misery Fellows,

Today, I have some cards from the House of Rot! Enoch and I were talking about the House of Flesh and needed to make some changes before we tackled that one, so we're skipping ahead a suit.

So past Anger and Bargaining, we're going right into Depression and Unreality. And we do so in style.

Each suit has had a color element going for it that really sticks it out from the others. Blades had the over the top saturated red blood. Wire had the orange-yellow wires all over. And Rot, as a dreamy escape from the other suits and Path of Misery entirely, is green-blue. And it's gorgeous.

I really love that each house, each suit, is getting a signature look so even if you don't know the different suit frames by heart, you get the clear feeling what it belongs to just by looking at it.

  • The House
    • The House of Rot is The Rotting Pit, where things sink down into death. This is the disgusting mass we slide into when we give up, when we feel nothing matters. And the rot, fungus, and mold here will steal our minds into nothingness.
  • 0 The Folly
    • In the House of Rot, our 0 is The Cocoon. We will slide away into our own place of isolation, and in doing so, remove ourselves from even the possibility of help. We didn't ask or yell, we merely slipped into nowhere. And here we will stay if we can't make a change. If we can't care.
  • 1 The Portal
    • In the House of Rot, our 1 is The Jelly Slit. When entering, people can see us going in. If they act quickly, they can grab us before we disappear inside forever. But we must also go in to get through. It is worth the act to try and stop people from going alone on this journey. There are other ways to feel this space than to disappear into it.
  • 2 The Nemesis
    • In the House of Rot, our 2 is The Feeder. This creature slithers over us, crushing us with its weight, as it feeds us shit. Depressive thoughts can become feedback loops, and in time our fear of ourselves, our sorrow, becomes an entity. But do not mistake it for merely what was to come, or what must be. When we see it this way, we do not even try to escape from under its weight.
  • 3 The Wound
    • In the House of Rot, our 3 is The Dreaming. This is existing purely in our minds, now. We have so disconnected from the world we exist in dreams now. And when we only live in our heads, we miss out on outside perspectives, the life of living, the world moving, shifting with other minds and experiences. Insularity is dangerous.
  • 4 The Harmonic
    • In the House of Rot, our 4 is The Rot Fields. The foundation of Rot is the gathering of our disgustingness, our depression, our mess, trash. We do not get rid of it, we simply gather into it. Then we begin to slip down inside it. It takes time, but eventually we are totally submerged. And on the way, we are alone, abandoned, or silent. We don't ask for help until it is too late. This is the substance of Rot, how it exists and continues to exist into the future.

Soon we'll have the 5, 6, 7, Denizen, and Ruler. Actually, we have the 5 and 6, but I want to save them for the back half of the suit. It's more fun to reveal half at a time, to me! : )

Enoch will have those finished up yet this week, and dive back into Flesh.
Based on this pace, it looks like we'll have half a suit each week. And that means we can schedule our future!

Our Schedule

January:
So on the 13th, the 2nd half of Rot.
On the 20th, the first half of Flesh.
27th, second half of Flesh.
February:
3rd, first half Nails.
10th, second half Nails.
17th, first half Rust.
24th, second half Rust.
March:
3rd, first half of Blood.
10th, second half of Blood.

That is how I will reveal the rest of the deck. So what follows after that? Let's make a plan! Shortly you will also get surveys so you can add more items to your pledges and get in early addresses. On the way I'll need to design the commemorative Enoch did/didn't suffer mugs, but we'll get to that when it seems right.

March:
17th, reveal the card back, reading cloth, and the early-printed deck! (Maybe I'll have extras to send tarot influencers? Or excited backers who want to do reviews and social posts?!)
24th, reveal the guidebook cover and the layout!
31st, reveal the oracle dice set!

April:
7th, reveal the card disk and art print choices!
14th, reveal the journal!
21st, reveal the Standard set box!
28th, reveal the Deluxe set box! - Announcing The Goblin's Oracle Dice + HHW Tarot + Misery Tarot

May:
1st, The Goblin's Oracle Dice launches on Backerkit! It will feature the Hot Housewives Tarot and Misery Tarot as main add-ons, and the oracle dice set in each of those decks will have a home among the Oracle Dice book.
5th, begin talking about manufacturing numbers, locking in orders.
12th, figuring out shipping costs!
19th, lock manufacturing numbers!
22nd, The Goblin's Oracle Dice project ends!
26th, mix backers into the Oracle Dice project? Early ship the Misery Tarot that's ready to?

And that's our timeline! We could be manufacturing in June, shipping in July. I may try to see if I can fold backers who want to be folded from this project into the Oracle Dice project to get all their items at once, or maybe we just ship these separately from that one, even if you back both? In an ideal world, I would mix orders together from the Hot Housewives Tarot for this, and Oracle Dice for people who backed all 3 or something.

It could get a little messy, but we'll see!

For now, though, we'll stick to week to week card shares! And no worries, there will be plenty of time to decide if you want to add dice or reading cloths or any of those items to your orders after we reveal what they look like and what they'll be like!

So I'll see you next week when we complete the House of Rot!

The Campaign Ends | Finances and What's Next!
about 1 year ago – Fri, Jan 03, 2025 at 01:16:56 PM

Hello my friends in Misery!

The Final Hours!

Happy New Year, and thank you to everyone who joined the livestream last night! It started at 5pm MST, and it lasted until 9.45pm MST! I was live for nearly 5 hours, as you guys kept the campaign alive by finding new backers, adding items to your pledges, and more, having us in overtime for almost 4 solid hours after the campaign was supposed to end! It's always a delight. You can watch it here if you want, and see the chaos in that chatroom!

For those of you who missed it, be sure to check the final hour stream out on the next project you back from me! It's become a tradition. (Your earliest chance will be on the Goblin's Journey enamel pin, plushie, and ita bag project launching in 20 days!) In those final hours, we saw cheaper discount pledge tiers and add-ons appear, and we saw new items get added to the project in the form of The Twisted Idol, a hand-made idol in the theme of the project that I will be making for 3 people, as well as a Commemorative Mug for Enoch, our artist, who we found out during the live stream I am keeping in a basement with a creature that I threaten to release any time we didn't have enough backers.

The Twisted Idol is a weird item I won't put available on the survey, but the mug will be available for anyone to add to their orders in the pledge manager. Likewise, the last minute cheap tiers and add-ons were only available in those final hours, and will not be made available in the pledge manager.

The Finances

If you've backed a previous project from me, you'll know I like to share the numbers whenever possible. I like to be transparent for a lot of reasons, but more than anything so people can see where their money goes! That always feels nice to me, at least!

We raised $77,800 on the dot with 812 backers.
In context, this is $22k more than the Hot Housewives raised, but $80k less than the Normal Tarot made, and $570k less than the Alleyway Oracles. I had no idea what to expect here, because I don't run projects in December if I can help it. I've been told it's not a good time to do so. But it did pretty decently I think, considering that I have so many projects going on at the moment. Overall, I'm happy with it.

As the 43rd project/product from me over the years, I'm feeling good. This is one that I intend to make a staple in my business for years to come, so this startup helped me found it and pay the artist what he deserved.

Now, let's chat about where the money goes:

First, it must be made clear that I won't receive all the money. People's pledges will fail, some people won't fix their payment methods, some people are paying over time and I won't get all their funds until 4 months pass.

  • First, we lose $243.60 for having 812 backers. It's a small fee for the platform.
  • Then, we lose $6,143.83 for platform and card charging fees.
  • We paid $12,423.98 for ads, which brought in $32,962 of our pledges, of which we pay Backerkit $1910.30. We also made $22,636 from our Launch emails sent through the platform, which means we owe Backerkit $2263.60 of that.
    • This is a Marketing total cost of: $16,697.88.
  • Enoch is being paid monthly until the deck is done for $30,000 total. This increased by $2000 through stretch goals, for $32,000.
  • Now, Manufacturing! These numbers are busier by a lot, so I'll try to simplify.
    • Standard sets cost me about $8.20 to produce. Deluxe sets cost me about $32.95 to produce. Current plans are to make 750 of the Standard sets and 500 of the Deluxe sets. With the extra sets of dice, reading cloths, etc we are looking at $21,192 in manufacturing.

Based on these numbers here, if everything comes through exactly as imagined price wise and money in wise, we have just $1492.69 leftover. I could, if I want, pay myself $1500 and call it about even for earnings.

But from experience, these numbers won't be right. Maybe it turns out the Disk in the deluxe edition will end up being made differently, costing more or less than expected. Maybe tariffs on China will inflate these hugely and I'll have to go somewhere else to get it all made, throwing the entire project into disarray and changing every single number on manufacturing. Maybe people overcommit and I lost 2k-5k as people's cards fail to charge and they don't fix it.

You never know!

What I do know, is that right now I plan to have about 110 standard copies in hand to sell after the project is over, and 250 deluxe copies to do the same with. I needed to make at least 500 deluxe sets to make some of the components reasonable to manufacture, so it seems at the moment I'll be hanging out with more of those than standards, which seems quite backwards.

If they sell, we'll be looking at something like $36,000 in earnings. Now, if I sell through New Titan (the manufacturer who takes care of www.alleymantarot.com to sell my items for me) they take a cut that I agree on for their work handling the items, so the business would bring in something like $25,000. But that's all potential earnings in the future, nothing right now.

And that's the wild part of things with indie creation, it takes a lot of work and sometimes no money comes in when it's done until it gets setup to become more passive income in the future. So I march on to the next project to set up another stream of passive income, and the next, and the next. But the most exciting thing to me is that now the Misery Tarot is covered and I'll never have that big $30k lump sum to pay up front again if I want to make more, so on a reprint I can just focus on manufacturing costs!

So now what?

What's Next

I'm going to get the pledge manager set up in the next week or so, open the pre-order store, and get you surveys so you can add commemorative mugs that I know you deeply desire. (You do, don't deny it. No, I have no idea what it will look like yet.) Otherwise Enoch will continue to turn in cards, which I'll be revealing Mondays, I will get the guidebook together, the disk, the cloth, the mug, the dice, and we will watch the final pieces slot into place over the next few months!

On the way, I'll mention things that are happening elsewhere-- the enamel pin project later this month, the game in March, the Oracle Dice's final edition in May, and a new, actually regular normal tarot in July. A comic in September, mayhaps? Probably something in October, maybe over on Kickstarter to mix things up.

So stay tuned for Misery Monday updates, and for me to let you all know we're sending surveys out for you to update your pledges, give us addresses, and get more fun items! : )

Thanks for the fantastic start to the new year my friends, I'll see you all Monday. Have a good weekend.
